Reporting a problem

It helps us most if you include:

  • the stations or addresses, and the date and time of the trip;
  • what NYC Express told you, and what actually happened;
  • your iPhone model and iOS version (feedback sent from the app includes the app version automatically);

Questions and answers

How is NYC Express different from other subway apps?

Station clocks and most transit apps tell you when the trains are coming. NYC Express tells you what to do: take the train at the platform, or let it go and wait for the express that gets you there sooner. It follows every train between you and where you’re going, works out each switch, and gives you one clear answer, worked out again every 10 seconds.

Should I really let a train go?

Only when it pays. NYC Express says wait only when the express catches up with a train ahead of yours at a station where you can switch, and gets you there at least a minute sooner. Delays, reroutes and packed trains can change things, so keep an eye on the platform signs too. When racing for the express gains nothing, which is often, it tells you to take the first train.

How good are its arrival times?

NYC Express doesn’t just repeat the MTA’s countdowns. Its own prediction model follows each train as it leaves each station, knows how long each stretch usually takes at that hour, and notices when the last few trains through a stretch ran slow. The times are still estimates: for trips more than 15 minutes out, your arrival shows as a range.

Can it take me door to door?

Yes. Tap Go, start from where you are or from any address, and choose an address, a place or a station. NYC Express weighs the stations around both ends, each with the walk to its entrance, and picks the ones that get you there soonest — not just the nearest.

Does it do buses?

Yes. At the top of the Stations and Go tabs, choose Trains, Trains & buses, or Buses. Buses plans trips on local, Limited, Select Bus Service and express buses. Bus times are the MTA’s live estimates when it has one for the bus, and its schedule otherwise; each bus says which. Express buses cost more than the subway, so a trip that takes one says so, and you can leave them out in Settings.

What if my train is delayed or a line suddenly closes?

Your trip keeps going, even while you use other screens. If a delay means you’d miss your switch, or a service change cuts off your route, NYC Express shows the fastest way on from where you are, even when you’re already on the train. It reads the MTA’s service alerts, so trains that skip stations, run local or express, or are rerouted are planned around.

Does it work underground?

Most stations have cell service. Between stations your trip keeps going on the latest times NYC Express has, and the app tells you when they may not be real time.

I walk fast, or I’m pushing a stroller. Does that matter?

Set your walking speed at the top of Settings. Every walk, flight of stairs and passageway is then timed at your pace, so you only get switches you can make.

Do I need an account? What about my location?

No account. Your saved trips stay on your phone. NYC Express uses your location only to plan trips from where you are, works them out on the phone, and never sends your location to its servers. Read the privacy policy for the details.

How do I delete my data?

Your saved trips and settings are only on your device: deleting the app removes them (in a browser, clear the site’s data). To have a feedback message deleted, email info@midware.cz with the email address you gave or the text of the message.

Is NYC Express an official MTA app?
